A Blondie’s Guide: ‘Whole Food’

Let’s talk about ‘Whole Foods’.  

If you’re a little crunchy like I am you’ll get why whole food is a big deal. Now, I am not talking about the Grocery store chain. I’m talking about real actual food!

Today I’m going to share with you one of my favorite blog posts from another blog I have that is ALL about being healthy:

HELLO HELLO! Today we are going to be chatting about ‘WHOLE FOODS’ … so if you’re not into learning about food or you don’t like to eat food or you’re not into eating good foods… stop reading NOW.

If you ARE looking for a some resources about things to put in your body to make it happier AND healthier, you are in the right place.

What are ‘Whole Foods’?

Definition: “plant food that has been processed or refined as little as possible and is free from additives or other artificial substances.” (Thank you google.) For example.. Fruits, Veggies… good grains.

That sounds easy enough, right? Well.. it’s not. Take a good look at what things you may have in your fridge or in your pantry or cabinets. I am willing to bet most of the food that you have stored away in there doesn’t quite meet the requirements for ‘Whole food’. In today’s world it’s much harder to find unprocessed, unrefined, un-tampered with food. Even a lot of the produce we consume has additives or artificial substances added to it.

Crazy, right?

Note: Check out the labels on your food! If you can’t read it or pronounce it, it most likely isn’t whole food and it probably isn’t too awesome for you.

Why do we need ‘Whole Foods’?

Now, I don’t mean to scare you, everything will be OKAY. Not having a strict diet of only ‘Whole food’ will not kill you and hasn’t been proven as a cause of cancer or any of that kind of junk (Maybe)… our bodies just don’t function as well without them. ‘Whole Foods’ are an essential part to having a healthy balanced body and life!

Our bodies were MADE to process and use Whole, Fresh, food! Imagine a life where all you ate was ‘Whole foods’, I’m sure you’re picturing more energy, a more balanced state of mind. Perhaps, clearer skin and memory, greater health and vibrancy. You are SO right. Our bodies function on a whole different level when we give them the nutrients they need without all the fillers or frills. Eating more whole foods is essential to health and a HUGE step in the right direction if you are ready for an improved healthy lifestyle.

How can we incorporate more ‘Whole Foods’ into our lives?

That being said, how in the world are we supposed to incorporate more Whole Foods into our diets? Easy Peasy. Buy them. I know what you’re thinking… ‘how am I supposed to eat that stuff?’ RECIPES! If you are on Pinterest I am SURE you will find what you need to make these whole foods sound appetizing. Create meal plans, get your family in on it, make it a goal! You will thank yourself later for being so proactive with your health.

The truth of the matter is that our bodies crave these foods and what we can find at the grocery store wont entirely sate that craving or fulfill all of the nutrients our bodies need. That is the BIGGEST reason I advocate for supplements.

5 ways to actually ACHIEVE your goals in 2018

As 2018 kicks into full gear, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to accomplish this year and how I’m going to really achieve my goals!

But, here’s the deal.. I want to help YOU too! Let’s be accountable together 🙂 SO lets talk about all the awesome ways you’re gonna kick 2018’s bootayy!

Here are FIVE things I’m implementing to kick my goals in the butt in 2018:

Learn from 2017

Spend a moment to just think about the Good, Bad and The Ugly from the past year.

I’ve spent like 6 weeks just reminiscing about 2017. Thinking about all the amazing blessings that I was a part of and trying to figure out what went wrong with some of the goals I set for myself.

I’m a huge believer in evaluation and not self sabotage. It’s okay to look back at things in your life and evaluate what could be better. However, it is NOT okay to think you’re a terrible person because things didn’t work out

Experience makes for a good road map.

The biggest thing for me last year was, my work ethic. I would set huge goals and just wait for them to happen. That’s no way to accomplish anything is it?

Use your past experiences to help you get realistic and clear on the things you’re working towards. You really CAN accomplish anything you set your mind to but, are you willing to put in the time and effort?

Set Solid Goals

Put things into sections

After you’ve done some self evaluation, you may realize that you have TONS of goals you want to make for 2018. ME TOO! My favorite way to keep them all organized is by putting them into sections and only making two BIG goals for each section. The sections I use are: Mind, Body, Family, Society, Finances, Spirit.

Get S.M.A.R.T.

Once you’ve decided on the basics of your goals, it’s time to get S.M.A.R.T. If you haven’t heard of this method of goal setting, it rocks!

It stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Timely.

If you can’t break a goal down into these categories, it’s not a very attainable goal.

Maintain progress

Set small ‘progress’ goals

You gotta keep yourself motivated. It is SO important to keep yourself on target if you really want to achieve your goals.

A good way to help you do this is by setting small goals. Quarterly, Monthly, weekly or even daily!

I love LOVE love checklists. Also making some type of progress visual will TOTALLY help you stay motivated.

Setting bite-sized goals & ways to progress will make your goals seem more attainable.

Stay Optimistic

Crap is going to hit the fan. It’s part of living in this world. Although, when it does happen, it is so important for your optimism shine through.

These goals you’ve made are just waiting for you on the other side of the hurdles that life has put in your path! Seriously, Heavenly Father or the Universe or whatever you want to call it.. wants you to succeed!

Become Obsessed

Write them down daily

You should be really clear on your goals at this point, right? Well now it’s time to put it to the test.

Are you obsessed with them? I’m not talking about jut wanting them… Or wishing really hard… Are you OBSESSED?

  • Is everything you’re doing helping your work towards your goals?
  • Are your thoughts consumed with the thought of achieving it?
  • Have you cut out all the unnecessary stuff?
  • Have you posted reminders all around your house?
  • Are you writing them down EVERY day?

Writing all of your goals down every day may seem a little insane but… I KNOW that it will help you get SO much closer to your goals!

It keeps them present and weighing on your brain.. Your brain will do anything to help you get there!

So get yourself a notebook or journal and write down 15-20 of your goals EVERY day.

Don’t Forget to Celebrate

A KEY part to setting goals is the “after party”. How are you going to celebrate when you’ve reached your goals?

You’d think just achieving the goal would be enough, right? Wrong. Depending on the goal, having some reward AFTER achievement will help you look forward to it and work even harder!

Believe in yourself

The biggest thing I learned from 2017 is that I need to have more belief in myself. If I want to achieve anything, I need to believe in myself.

I can’t let past mistakes define me & I need to have faith that I can do hard things!

If you feel like you’re not quite there yet, get yourself an ‘accountability’ partner who believes you are! It always helps to have an incredible tribe along the way.

5 Ways To Practice Self Care & Chill The Heck Out

Finding contentment as a control freak is a difficult task indeed. Life is pretty unpredictable & it’s easy to have mental breakdowns and hyperventilate. 

So instead of COMPLETELY shutting down & becoming a couch potato wrapped in fuzzy blankets and sadness for the rest of our lives, what can we do to overcome it?

Going back to my post last week, I wanted to get a little bit more specific about the things I use to help me chill & to practice self care.

If you’re anything like me, Type A, Red personality, absolute insane maniac obsessed with success, these will make you a feel a little salty about doing them but oh so much better after 

Finding your chill is ROUGH.

STEP ONE.

Breathe.

If you’re not dying… it’s fine. You’re fine. It’s fine.

Don’t just take a couple huffs in and out, really take a minute to monitor where your thoughts are.

Give yourself a minute to stop freaking the freak out and really breathe.

I like to go go go so taking a second to breathe is THE WORST. Like why would I do that when I can just throw myself into the issue and fix it?

But, I have definitely found taking time to breathe helps me to approach issues with less of an insane energy and more hope.

Breathing saves lives!

STEP TWO

Take a step back & dump your brains

Not gonna lie.. this is my favorite one. I whip out my notebook, grab my favorite pen and furiously write down everything on my mind. Which usually takes me about 15 minutes.

Doing a brain dump can be hard when you’re first starting so here are some ideas to get you started:

-What are you Grateful for?

-What is driving you crazy?

– What are the most pressing things on your to-do list?

-What decisions need to be made? (Pros-cons)

STEP THREE

Do something you LOVE

TREAT YO SELF.

Take a bath, journal, create some art, dance in your kitchen, buy some cake and eat it all by yourself.

Give yourself permission to have a little joy and do something you love.

Then proceed to feel awesome for being so good to yourself. (The best way to get a mental self congrats for eating a whole cake)

It’s important to give our brain a break every once and awhile, have a little distraction so we can come back to our issues with a different mindset and a little more happy.

STEP FOUR

Work out

Stop. Stop rolling your eyes. I get it. Working out is NOT the ideal way to do self care.

But when you’re a control freak and you have all the pent up energy of an insane person cause.. control. WORK THAT BODYYY.

It helps your hormones chill. It helps your body chill. It helps your brain chill.

Seriously working out may be the answer to everything… sad but true.

Get your blood flowing and watch magic happen. (Just do some yoga at least)

STEP FIVE

Make a realistic plan

I lied.. THIS is my favorite one. Time to let your creative planning brain shine through. Grab your brain dump notebook, some colorful pens and get to work! Create a list of what needs to happen, make some small goals to achieve and become clear on what you really need/want to accomplish. 

Its okay to change the plan up a little bit, its okay to release those things that don’t serve you. Be real with yourself about what you can and can’t handle.

I promise to write a little bit more on goal setting and how to achieve your goals late this week!

I hope these tips help you get a little more centered on the important stuff and help you chill the heck out too! Sometimes our plans might not go our way BUT we just have to trust that it’s all for our own good.

How I’m learning to Trust God & chill my inner control freak

I am a little bit of a CONTROL FREAK

Let me show you why…

Scenario: Your life is going good. Your house is clean. Your finances are in order. All of a sudden.. A huge opportunity drops into your lap (like your DREAM opportunity). BUT you have to move, take some financial risks and live completely differently than you have been. (Not to mention, your house won’t be clean for the next three months)

If this makes you excited & overwhelmed all at the same time… AND you already started planning out how that’s going to work in your head, you might be a control freak too!

I’m the kind of girl that has a 10 year plan and likes to keep it updated in a google drive spreadsheet.

A little background for this scenario: I’m currently in school for a Bachelors in Strategic Communications & Marketing, My husband is serving in the bishopric at a young single adults ward for our church and I have a small business I run out of our home. We’ve been super comfortable.. But definitely not living our best life.

All these things are part of the plan, right?

So you can imagine my feels when the scenario described above occurred in MY life. Here I am, having just set all my 2018 goals, excited for the upcoming year… you know all the plans. This was NOT part of them.

But after lots of discussion & prayer we knew that although it wasn’t my plan, this opportunity was God’s plan for us. We’re Moving to Phoenix, AZ!

I had a mini meltdown. I was Ecstatic. Terrified. Overwhelmed. My brain immediately went into planning mode.

-Financial aid for the upcoming school year was still up in the air.
-I had to somehow get into the rest of my general classes this semester for my associates to transfer.
-All my classes had to be online so that we could move in the middle of the school year.
-We have to find *affordable* housing in Arizona in the next 6 weeks.
-Not to mention, we had to find someone to take over our lease or end up paying $1500 more dollars for an uninhabited place.
Etc. etc. etc.

There’s a lot going on and a lot to consider… obviously, as with any move or big change in your life.

My inner control freak is losing her crap. FOR REAL.

But let me tell you, when you are on the right path, heaven showers down some miraculous blessings. All of those worries I listed earlier, have been dealt with or are in the process of figuring themselves out. Sometimes prayer is the most efficient way to get things done.

I’ve spent a lot of my life halfheartedly trusting that God will take care of things.. Even though HE ALWAYS DOES.

But, recently I have been noticing how God is slowly teaching me to roll with the punches and how His plan is ALWAYS always better.

Trusting in Him helps us to drop all the cares of the world and just let it happen. I’m not saying that we should just stand by and watch our life unfold or just be the victim of our own circumstances. No, we need to include our Heavenly Father in a more intimate way with our life plans and TRUST HIM.

Why the heck don’t we trust the all powerful, all knowing being in our lives? What kind of ridiculous notion is that?

I know for me, as a control freak I tend to like things my way… I have a plan and that’s how things should always work. If and When things don’t fall perfectly into place within that plan, I tend to shut down and panic. (I’m working on it)

So here are 5 Things I do to chill my inner control freak:

  • Pray

This is probably THE most important & helpful thing you could possibly do when you’re panicking is stop, drop and PRAY. Talking with heaven always helps me keep eternal perspective, which is the best kind of perspective to have when you feel like you might be losing control.

  • Brain dump

I keep a notebook just for this purpose. I find writing it all out to be very helpful, even if it’s just a word cloud or a pros and cons list. Get all the ideas and plans out on paper and THEN organize.

  • Lists

I love love love todo lists! I even make to do lists for different sections of my life.  For example: a house to do list, a school work to do list and a business to do list. It helps me keep track of all the sections of my life and what needs to get done. PLUS it’s very fun to check things off lists.

  • Small goals

I am a FAN of productivity. Its low key my crack cocaine… but when I’m not productive or if I feel I haven’t “made it” that day, I get really down on myself. Like I said, it’s a drug. SO I’ve worked on it and found that setting small goals for myself on the daily and making sure they’re small enough to accomplish in 24 hours really helps my self esteem!

  • Visualize & Let go

I know visualizing may sound a little crazy but, our minds are AMAZING. Visualizing what you want in life helps you to get the energy you need to get there & visualizing helps you release your intense need for total control. Visualize what you want and then release it into the world!

The biggest thing is that we trust God… through all the thick & all the thin. We must trust Him through all the dark places, believing with all our hearts that He will show us the light at the end.

I’ve been learning this over and over again this month. Heavenly Father has been lovingly guiding me through the wreckage of my own plans to show my HIS, which is so much better than I could have ever imagined.
